A day at the races

The Sukhoi SU-31 is the most agile and powerful aerobatic aircraft in production today. This single-seat aircraft has the highest power-to-weight ratio of any piston engine aircraft, giving the SU-31 truly unbelievable sustained vertical line. Although the Su-31 is physically similar to the SU-26, it is actually really quite different. The main difference being that the entire fuselage, is everything behind the cockpit, is composite rather than tubular steel. This reduces the weight by some 30 kg's, which is very significant in an aircraft of this sort.

Current Versions of the Sukhoi Su-31:

Su-31: Basic version; non-retractable landing gear. Alternatively known as Su-31T (Turnirnyi: Competition).
Su-31M: As Su-31T but with Zvezda SKS-94 pilot's extraction system under modified canopy with deeper frame. Empty weight 760 kg; normal T-O weight 880 kg. Prototype RA-01486 converted from Su-31T.
Su-31M2: Available from 2000 (first production batch of five). M-9F engine; lightened structure.
