The Red Bull Air Race takes place in the port of Mina Zayed,
Abu Dhabi.

The Red Bull Air Race World Series in Abu Dhabi kicked off as planned today
(Saturday 18 March) at
15:00 (local time) after the powerful sandstorm that hit the United Arab
Emirates on Friday eased considerably. While a strong breeze and light rain
remained, it was well below the gale-force 36-knot gusts that forced the
cancellation of the competition on Friday. As per race regulations, wind speed
must not exceed 30 knots, or 55 km/h. American

Chambliss succeeded in beating 10 other world class
pilots to win the first competition of the season with a total time of
3:33.37.

last year's winner in Abu Dhabi,

with 3:41.72 seconds.
"This is a total surprise. I never expected it. However I am
thoroughly enjoying it as I beat
Mike Mangold to the title," said the
American ace
Kirby
Chambliss, who flew an Edge 540.
The win was all the more sweet for
Chambliss who was earlier
disqualified in the Qualifier but did well to stay calm and keep himself
within striking distance throughout the race.
That allowed
Chambliss,
beaten thrice to second place last season, to an 'unexpected' win and a
triumph in the battle between the Americans.
