Kirby Chambliss takes of from aircraft carrier.

Chambliss on August 8 put on a sneak preview, which started with launching his prop-driven, high-performance plane from the flight deck of the Midway  marking the first time since the ship was decommissioned in 1991 that a plane had lifted off from the carrier.

San Diego 07 - Kirbys new plane

Kirby Chambliss new plane.

Race day events will include a demonstration by Navy aircraft from past and present and a sideshow by Red Bull ™s fleet of aircraft. An MiG-17F is part of the fleet, as is the Red Bull Helicopter, which flies upside down. Thirteen pilots will navigate high-performance race planes through inflatable air gates on an aerial race track over San Diego Bay. The pilots race against the clock and fly 10 to 20 feet above the water at speeds of 260 mph. Qualifying takes place on Sept. 21 to determine which pilots take part in the finals Sept. 22. Crowds can watch from Embarcadero Park.

Special land-based viewing areas will be set up to offer up-close views of the aerial action, although the competition will be visible from almost anywhere along the Embarcadero, especially Seaport Village. Two-day tickets for the special viewing areas are $30, with single-day tickets available for $10 on Friday and $25 on Saturday.

The planes attain speeds of up to 250 mph and the pilots withstand gravitational forces of 10G. The San Diego Bay stop, the first ever, is one of 10 tour sites for the 2007 World Series.

Despite its name, the competition isn't exactly a race pitting planes against each other at the same time. Instead, each plane flies solo in a race against the clock. The scoring system measures the time of each aircraft.

Pilots in the Red Bull Air Race World Series are making their final United States stop on a 10-city worldwide tour. The race winner is the one who accomplishes the best time after two runs of the same course. Pilots race on a twisted course with five groups of specially erected spinnaker pylon obstacles. Flying against the rules results in disqualification or in a time penalty added to the flying time.

The first six ranked pilots of each race leg are scored from 6 to 1 points, top down. The air racer with the most points at the end of the series becomes Red Bull Air Race world champion. The champion of the 2005 season was Mike Mangold from the United States. The champion in 2006 was fellow American Kirby Chambliss.

The system also factors centrifugal force achieved, the speed of the aircraft and -- in what surely is unique to the Red Bull Air Race World Series -- the pulse of the pilots

Boaters should be aware that the waterway passage stretching from USS Midway aircraft carrier to Coronado Island will be closed to boat traffic during practice sessions and portions of the two-day competition, which pits World War II-style acrobatic aircraft maneuvering over and around a series of 60-ft.-high pylons placed on the bay.

Race officials will close the in-water area to boat traffic of all kinds at the following times: noon-4 p.m. Sept. 19; 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m. Sept. 20; 8-10 a.m., 11 a.m-12:45 p.m. and 1:30-5:30 p.m. Sept. 21; and 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sept. 22 (or Sept. 23, depending on weather). Other authorized vessels and personnel will be permitted entry.
