Third Training Mike Mangold Disqualification in third training round
There was a distinctive, high-pitched buzz around downtown yesterday as the pilots assembled for the Red Bull Air Races made their first practice runs just above San Diego Bay. Workers turned to watch and people were seen peering from hotel rooms and condominiums looking out over the section of the bay beyond Seaport Village and the Embarcadero Marina parks. “This is going to be an exceptional venue for our event,” 2006 Red Bull Air Races series champion Kirby Chambliss said in August, after taking off from the Midway for an exhibition flight just to the north of Saturday's race course.Practice continues today for the inaugural San Diego races. The first official segment of the Red Bull Air Races is scheduled to begin about 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, with the first qualifying run through the precision-flying course marked by 13 pylons. Strangely, weather is a concern. A rare Pacific storm is pushing to the south with periods of rain and thunderstorms likely throughout tomorrow and through Saturday morning. If weather interrupts tomorrow's qualifying, that part of the program can be condensed into Saturday's schedule. If weather restricts Saturday's races, the event can be held over until Sunday afternoon. Here's a quick primer on the series, for which San Diego is the ninth of 10 stops on an international tour
