The pilots must make 11 gate crossings and perform three
aerobatic figures on each run of the Longleat track, with the pass through the
quadro at Gate 5 a left-knife edge. They must also take into consideration the
large number of trees dotted around the undulating countryside. The
airfield at Wing Farm was used as a base. |

Mike
"Mungo" Mangold closed the
gap on ranking leader Peter
Besenyei when he secured victory in the Longleat Red
Bull Air Race on Sunday, his third win of the 2005 Air Race World Series.
Mangold
finished with an aggregate time of 2:54.70, just 2.99 seconds clear of
compatriot and runner-up Kirby
Chambliss. Besenyei maintains his World Series
Ranking lead courtesy of finishing in third place a further 2.14 seconds behind.
Despite incurring a one-second penalty for excessive speed at the approach of
his opening run, Mangold
once again proved in his Edge 540 that he is the
fastest competitor on the World Series.
He also secured first place in Rotterdam
and Zeltweg, Austria but allowed
Besenyei
to take over at the top of the rankings when he finished fifth two
weeks ago in Rock
of Cashel,
Ireland after touching a gate pylon.
Peter
Besenyei, champion in the season-opener in Abu Dhabi and in Ireland, leads the
rankings with 25 points, one ahead of
Mangold, while Germany’s Klaus Schrodt,
fourth in Longleat, is back in third place with 13 points.
“The conditions were great today but the course was very, very tricky,” said
former Top Gun pilot Mike
Mangold. “We had to deal with rolling terrain, with trees
and even birds flying all over the place. We had to be really focused.
“It’s still very close in the ranking race, we’ve got two more events to
go and it will probably go right down to the wire.
