Peter
Besenyei produced a remarkable ‘clean’ run in front of over 60,000
spectators to collect maximum points in front of Cashel’s stunning
fortification and move to the top of the World Series Ranking.
France’s Nicolas
Ivanoff grabbed a career-best second place, again with a
penalty-free performance, while Paul
Bonhomme of England was third for the
second event in succession.
Heavy rains earlier in the day had almost forced a cancellation of the event
only for powerful gusts of wind later in the afternoon to reduce it from two
rounds of racing to one.
“It was certainly not ideal conditions, the wind and rain made the ride very,
very bumpy,” said Besenyei, winner of the season-opening race in Abu Dhabi
back in April.
“The conditions were flyable but the real difficulty was with the landing.
However, the conditions dried out I am so glad we managed to produce a race for
all the Irish spectators.”
Besenyei’s win took him three points clear of American rival
Mike
Mangold on
the World Series standings. He maintained his superb form this season with a
time of 01:09.25, nearly three seconds clear of Ivanoff.
Mangold
could manage only fifth in the challenging Cashel conditions and saw his
chances of a third win this season disappear when he picked up a 10-second
penalty for touching a gate with his wing.
The former Top Gun pilot was only 07.06 seconds behind
Besenyei’s winning mark
and could live to rue the mistake as the battle for the World Series
Championship hots up.
Spaniard Alexander
MacLean was unable to take part owing to technical problems with
his Extra 300L aircraft. Germany’s Klaus
Schrodt finished fourth,
Steve
Jones of England sixth and flying Dutchman
Frank
Versteegh seventh.
